GO! Ode to 6th Street Bridge Exhibit at Art Share L.A.

The 6th Street Bridge, officially titled the Sixth Street Viaduct, is the subject matter of a multi-media group art show opening at Art Share L.A. on Friday, September 11, 2015 @ 7-10pm. Ode to 6th Street Bridge is on view free of charge to the public during 1-6pm starting Wednesday, September 9 through Saturday, September 19, 2015. A closing reception is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2015 @ 7-10pm.  Co-curated by Dale Youngman and Tanner Blackman, the exhibition features over 70 renditions by more than 45 local artists of the iconic, historic architecture slated for demolition over the coming months (and to be later replaced by a reimagined new structure). Situated in the heart of the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles, Art Share L.A. is located at 801 E. 4th Pl., 90013. The Ode to the Bridge exhibition marks the 24th art show presented at Art Share L.A. under the leadership of Executive Director Cheyanne Sauter. Since January 2014, these two dozen shows have supported over 75 Los Angeles artists with the nonprofit’s art sales of more than 150 works.

One of the most recognized and photographed structures in Los Angeles, the 6th Street Bridge has been the setting for dozens of commercials, TV and film shoots. Built in 1932, it is the longest viaduct crossing the Los Angeles River, connecting Boyle Heights to the city’s urban center. Although the landmark is eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, an unfortunate error made during its construction became apparent after 20 years, when a type of cement-eating disease known as Alkali-Silica Reaction began causing cracks in the concrete, thus compromising the integrity of the structure.

“It is important that we memorialize the beauty and history of this iconic bridge,” said Los Angeles City Councilmember José Huizar. “This exhibit allows us to recognize the history and importance of the 6th Street Bridge to the residents of Boyle Heights, the Arts District and all of L.A.  While we are sad to see this iconic structure go, we look forward to the design and function of the new Sixth Street Viaduct, which promises to create its own substantial legacy.”

“We hope that the Ode to the Bridge show offers a raucous dirge and a fitting send off for this beloved icon of the City of L.A.,” said exhibit co-curator Tanner Blackman. “Through paintings, photos, video installations, and more, the exhibition presents artists’ reflections on the 83-year-old bridge and its place in our shared experience of Downtown and Boyle Heights.”

Exhibit co-curator Dale Youngman added, “I am thrilled at the number of submissions we received, as it shows just how much it also means to the artists living in the shadow of the bridge. Some of the participating artists live and work in the Arts District, including Tom Garner, Jim Stern, Fred Hoerr, and Qathryn Brehm.”

Celebrate the Arts District! Visit Art Share L.A. to see “MUSE-ings: Snapshots of the Arts District.” The exhibit features artworks by artists inspired by my photographs; selections from my new book are also on view. Reinterpreting my images, over 40 artists created new works of art: Jari “Werc” AlvarezA.S. AshleyQathryn BrehmJesse BurgosGary CallahanDiego Cardoso, Susie S. Participating artists incorporated artistic license to create narrative and representational art based on my photographs utilizing a wide range of styles, including impressionism, surrealism, abstract and outsider. Their work represents a wide range of media including paintings using oil, spray paint, watercolor and/or acrylic, mixed-media prints and drawings, as well as sculptural installations, neon, and more. Because I am inspired daily by art and artists, it’s natural for me to involve people whose work I love and admire by sharing their creativity through this exhibit.

Together with 52 photographs from the book, the MUSE-ings exhibit features 51 original works of art. Proceeds from artwork and book sales during the exhibit’s run benefit Art Share L.A., a nonprofit community center, which is a sanctuary for the arts and their creators that provides 30 live/work units and 14,000 sq. ft of creative space in Downtown Los Angeles.
